London hospital converts large boilers to condensing operation with add-on system

Thermal Energy, condensing boilers, heat recovery

Thermal Energy’s Flu-Ace system has been used to add condensing operation to large boilers at King’s College Hospital.

Large boilers at King’s College Hospital in south-east London have been converted to condensing operation using Thermal Energy International’s Flu-Ace heat-recovery system to recover up to 90% of the heat that is normally lost. The order was worth £303 000. The syste4m is expected to reduce energy consumption by over 8 GWh a year and reduce CO2 emissions by over 1500 t a year.

A single Flu-Ace can handle a varying flow of flue gases from multiple boilers. This results in a lower initial investment, cheaper operating costs and a higher return on investment than dedicated equipment for each boiler exhaust. A full payback is achieved in less than three years, with savings continuing throughout the unit’s operating life of 20+ years.

A variable-speed induced draught fan at the tower outlet automatically maintains the optimum flue-gas static set point at the tower outlet — preventing interference with upstream processes.
