The Gaydon hangar at RAF Valley is now heated by Nor-Ray-Vac continuous radiant tube heaters. The 5000 m2 hangar has a 20 m-high roof and can accommodate up to 15 Hawk training jets.
It was not practical to install these heaters at low level. Instead, they had to be carefully positioned to follow the line of the curved roof.
There are four continuous systems with 28 burners, installed by Gradwoods of Stockport. The heating is zoned into six areas, so that heat is provided only in areas where it is required.
Working areas reach 16 to 20°C in five to 10 minutes, enabling work to commence at short notice.
