Levolux helps Lancaster University building achieve BREEAM ‘excellent’ rating

Levolux brise soleil and specially design solar ‘chimneys’ prevent overheating and cool this new building at Lancaster University.

A ‘solar chimney’ system designed by Levolux drives ventilation in a new building at Lancaster University to prevent the build up of heat.

Resembling tall glass towers, the five ‘chimneys’ were fitted to the southern elevation of the Statistics Centre. The fronts are glass, with ducts on the rear feeding into the building. The Sun heats the air that is trapped in the chimneys, which rises and draws warm air out of the building. Cooler air then enters the building at other points.

The building has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and is shorted listed for RIBA award.

Levolux brise soleil between the solar chimneys reduces heat gain, reducing the requirement for air conditioning and its associated carbon emissions.
