WindowMaster, a major provider of natural-ventilation solutions in Europe, commissioned three case studies based on mathematical modelling to show how natural ventilation combined with mechanical ventilation can reduce energy consumption in shopping centres. The thermal simulations were for a 12-month period.
The studies found that reliance on mechanical cooling systems can be reduced by introducing natural ventilation and night cooling into environmental control systems to remove heat gains from lighting, people and electronic equipment.
Steen Hagelskjaer, co-author of the report, says, ‘The pilot study analysed the energy consumption and indoor environment quality of four types of ventilation using thermal building simulations in three different models of store found in a typical shopping centre.
‘A hybrid solution consisting of automatically controlled natural ventilation and night cooling with assisting mechanical ventilation, cooling and heating, showed the most promising energy-saving potential.
‘The savings are made by supplementing energy-sapping mechanical heating and cooling systems with natural ventilation. To ensure a comfortable and productive indoor environment, mechanical ventilation with cooling should also be installed.’
