Cyril Sweett appointed for new Tate Modern development
Published:  March 2008

The health-and-safety division of Cyril Sweett has been appointed to the design and construction team of Tate Modern as co-ordinator for construction design and management.

The latest development will create a spectacular new building adjoining Tate Modern to the south, on the foundation of the oil tanks of the former power station. It will be Britain’s most important new building for culture since the creation of the Royal National Theatre in 1976 and the British Library in 1998. The new building will increase the size of Tate Modern by 60%, adding 21 000 m2 of new space.

Work is expected to start on site in the middle of 2009, and it is hoped that the new building will be completed in time for the Olympic Games in 2012.
