Ground-source heat pump serves underfloor heating in sports pavilion

Energy drawn from the ground surrounding this new sports pavilion at Caterham in Surrey serves the underfloor heating system.

Energy from the ground serves underfloor heating in the new Queens Park Pavilion at Caterham in Surrey. Built to replace a former structure destroyed by an arson attack, this £700 000 project offers local residents an energy-efficient sports and community centre with modern facilities.

At the heart of the building services is an Eco Thermia Duo 16 ground-source heat pump that extracts energy from the ground through three 200 m loops of pipework in the ground surrounding the pavilion using a water-glycol mixture.

The Duo design is a variant of Eco Heat Pump’s Diplomat TWS, the key difference being the provision of a separate hot-water tank.

The Thermia Duo has an integrated electric heating element with three power stages (3, 6 and 9 kW) in case additional heating should ever be required if not enough heat can be drawn from the ground.

Like all Thermia units, the Duo has weather-compensation control to ensure that the water supplied to the underfloor heating is never hotter than needed to maintain the required indoor temperature.
