Cutting the cost of baggage handling

The rapid-installation capabilities of Cablofil’s wire-mesh cable tray reduced the installation costs of the baggage-handling system in Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport.

Cablofil has supplied standard and modified wire-mesh cable tray and accessories for 26 km of baggage-handling conveyors in Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport. Materials-handling specialist Vanderlande Industries chose the product because it was suitable for the flat cables and flexible busbar used throughout the system and it was easy to make tap-offs at any point.

Because every baggage-handling system is unique, the tray was fitted on site, exploiting the fact that wire-mesh tray is easy to cut and bend into complex shapes without specialist tools. To help keep down installation costs, Cablofil offered an on-site free training course for all contractors.

Standard products met most needs. Among the special requirements was to develop a tray size to fit into confined spaces in the conveyor system. This tray is 85 mm wide and 47 mm deep, created by folding a standard product in a different way. An adjustable custom-made lid follows curves around the baggage-handling system. Accessories were supplied off the shelf by wholesaler Hagermeyer.
