Lighting a listed church
Published:  July 2004

A range of innovative new lighting effects has been created for this Grade 2 listed church in Middlesbrough by consulting engineers Black & Veatch of Stockton. Utilising a multitude of colours, mosaics, picture representations and specially designed dimmers and fittings, the practice has enabled the Sacred Heart Church to introduce light settings for various pieces of music and events.

Following close consultation with the client, the correct luminescence was chosen for the design to be completed. New mains and sub-mains cables were installed prior to detailed work on the lighting. Steve Watts, regional office manager at Black & Veatch, comments, ‘As part of the church refurbishment, we had to consider the design criteria very carefully, examining the principal elevations and key viewing directions. It has been very important to understand the needs of the church so that the new lighting produces ust the right effect
