Externally, the school has a grass roof, covered almost entirely with sedum, which helps insulate the building and reduce heating requirements.
Mark Anderton of services consultant Slender Winter Partnership says, ‘Modern construction, teamed with large floor areas within the building, meant that underfloor heating was the most appropriate heating system for this project. The system also provides low surface temperatures, which is safe for young children, and also all possible floor space can be used — a crucial requirement for a classroom environments.’
The system has six manifolds feeding individual heating zones. The largest manifold serves 17 pipe loops. The system covers 1100 m2.
