Water-source heat pumps replace boilers

Water-source heat pumps drawing heat from a stream have been installed to replace two existing boilers serving Schaffer House in Crawley. Mitie, which is Crawley Borough Council’s housing-repair contractor, worked with Baystar, building-services engineers specialising in sustainable energy solutions.

Schaffer House is in the Maidenbower area and has 45 flats with one and two bedrooms arranged over three levels.

The scheme cost £86 000, and the council will see a combined annual income and saving of up to £12 700,with a carbon reduction of 49%.

Tessa Guy, director of Baystar, said, ‘Water-source heat pumps provide a great sustainable energy solution where there is a water source such as a stream, like here at Schaffer House. We are excited that Crawley Borough Council believe in the benefits of the system.

The new system will work effectively while temperatures are above freezing, and the property will have a new backup boiler installed for when temperatures drop below freezing.

The old boilers from Schaffer House are being donated to a local gas training centre for students to work on.
