VRF air-conditioning is gas powered
Published:  June 2004

Gas-powered air conditioning with all the features of a VRF system is offered by Sanyo in its GHP range. Instead of an electrically driven compressor, a GHP unit has an open-drive compressor driven by a gas-powered engine. Either natural gas or LPG can be used.

Using gas to drive the compressor overcomes many of the problems of obtaining a suitable electricity supply. A 3-phase supply is available in only about 60% of UK commercial properties and is very expensive to install. Large air-conditioning systems cannot be run from a single-phase supply.

GHP requires only a single-phase supply for its ancillary equipment.

These chillers are quiet in operation — 58 dB(A) for a 20 hp model. Up to 24 indoor units can be connected to one outdoor unit with pipe runs up to 120 m. An indoor/outdoor ratio of 200% can be accommodated.
