HVCA, low carbon legislation

Enforcing legislation as the key to reducing carbon emissions — Graham Manly.

Legislating for zero carbon
Published:  February 2010

Copenhagen was disappointing on a number of fronts. How useful or practical can a non-binding accord ever be? Politics usually gets caught between long-term goals and short-term vested interests, which makes securing consensus almost impossible on a global scale.

Sanyo, CO2 heat pump, renewable energy

Among the technologies incorporated in the Eco House at Petroc College in Barnstaple is a Sanyo CO2 heat pump. The house is pictured here being visited by a party of school children.

Published:  February 2010

To help train the next generation of engineers, Sanyo has supplied a carbon-dioxide heat-pump system for the Eco House at the Petroc college in Barnstaple. This 3-storey highly insulated building is designed to showcase working examples of the latest technology for harnessing high-efficiency and renewable energy sources.

Vent-Axia, ventilation, mechanical

Ventilation energy requirements for six blocks of flats in Redbridge have been considerably reduced by controllable ventilation based on Vent-Axia Lo-Carbon Sentinel Twin fans.

Controlled ventilation cuts energy use in Redbridge
Published:  February 2010

Vent-Axia is working with Redbridge Homes to replace old central extract fans in six 11-storey blocks of flats with energy-efficient Lo-Carbon Sentinel Twin fans and time clocks. The level of control provided by the new fans will considerably reduce energy consumption. Ventilation contractor 1st Cool installed the 14 Sentinel units on the roofs of the buildings, connecting them to existing ductwork.

Passivent, natural ventilation

Passivent natural ventilation and Mitsubishi air conditioning work together to deliver low-energy environmental control in this new health-care facility.

Passive cooling teams up with air conditioning for low-energy environmental control
Published:  February 2010

A combination of natural ventilation and air conditioning to prevent overheating is contributing to an ‘excellent’ NEAT* rating for a new building for Brent Primary Care Trust. The £18 million Stonebridge Hillside Hub was designed by Edward Cullinan Architects for Hillside Housing Trust.

Glow-worm, clearly solar, renewable energy

All-in-one packs from Glow-worm make it easy to install solar thermal.

Clearly Solar packs deliver renewable energy simply
Published:  February 2010

Glow-worm’s Clearly Solar all-in-one packs are designed to make installation simple and uncomplicated. Packs include flat-plate solar-thermal collectors and everything needed to achieve a best-practice installation. Clearly Solar packs are delivered to the installer’s choice of destination.

Monodraught, natural ventilation, windcatcher

The city of Yazd in Iran is almost exclusively vernacular architecture, with features such as this wind tower to ventilate and cool buildings.

Adapting to higher temperatures
Published:  February 2010

Benjamin Jones finds lessons in how other countries have learned to design and operate buildings to temper the effects of high ambient temperatures.

M&E Sustainability

The road to delivering zero carbon
Published:  February 2010

Although the M&E industry is cutting carbon emissions, it must fundamentally rethink how it delivers projects because it has to go lower, says Jim O’Neil.

Dimplex, heat pump, ground source, air source

Several heat pumps can be used in parallel to met higher loads, such as at this nursing home.

Heat pumps start to show their potential for DHW
Published:  February 2010

Chris Davis looks at the role of heat pumps, including air source, to produce domestic hot water and help meet Government targets for renewable energy.

Remeha, Broag, biomass boiler

This 550 kW Remeha-Gilles biomass boiler has replaced oil in a Norfolk school and reduced CO2 emissions by 177 t a year.

An education in biomass
Published:  February 2010

Long-term reduction in carbon emissions are being achieved at a school in Norfolk following the replacement of 20+ year-old oil-fired boilers with a 550 kW Remeha-Gilles biomass boiler. The boiler house at Flegg High School in Martham was stripped out and refitted by Cofely. CO2 emissions are estimated to have been reduced by 177 t a year, and the financial saving is estimated at £7000 a year.

Designed to maximise the efficiency of heat pumps and condensing boilers is a range of fan convectors from Dimplex.

Dimplex launches range of fan convectors for heat-pump systems
Published:  February 2010

Dimplex has introduced a range of wall-mounted fan-convectors for use with its heat pumps. They are said to offer a responsive and energy-efficient alternative to underfloor heating and conventional radiators for heat-pump systems. The SmartRad range can be installed in existing buildings as a compact and energy-efficient alternative to conventional radiators and in new buildings.

Venting concerns
Published:  February 2010

Manufacturers would like the green dream to become a reality — but are disturbed that attitudes and concerns with capital cost are preventing that happening.
