The commercial-products section features a wide range of conduit and trunking systems in thermo-plastics, aluminium and steel. There is also information on new products such as shuttle boxes and consolidation boxes, and Dat-Mat low-smoke, water-resistant polymer mat.

The dangers of wet insulation
Published:  July 2005

‘Corrosion under wet insulation’ published by Pittsburgh Corning explains that any insulation that is permeable acts like a wet blanket around a pipe if it is in contact with water and oxygen. Corrosion will thus form under the insulation, aided by acids and chloride in the insulation itself.

Some estimates state that corrosion costs in the UK exceed £25 billion a year — 3.5% of GNP. Using the correct products and technology can probably save about a third of these losses.

Pittsburgh Corning’s Foamglas insulation is impermeable to moisture and resists the development of corrosion by minimising water intrusion and retention. It also does not contribute to the corrosion of carbon or stainless steels and becomes an integral part of a corrosion protection barrier.

Hep3O

The ins and outs of the Hep3O push-fit water pressure system are explained in this technical handbook.

Plastics pipe systems
Published:  July 2005

Hepworth Plumbing Products has published a technical manual on its Hep3O plastics alloy water pressure systems. Designed for potable water and sewage, the range extends from 63 to 630 mm with pressure ratings from 8 to 16 bar.

A key to the system is the Power-Lock seal, a push-fit joint providing exceptional performance under positive or negative pressure.

A design section helps specifiers take account of factors such as hydraulic design, surge and fatigue, external compressive loads and deflection. There is a guide to codes of practice and regulator documents on specifying pressure systems.

Fire and smoke dampers
Published:  July 2005

Guidance on the application and installation of fire and smoke dampers has been published by the Association for Specialist Fire Protection, filling a serious information gap.

Entitled ‘An industry guide to design for the installation of fire and smoke-resisting dampers’, it emphasises the importance of installing dampers as recommended by each manufacturer and encourages specifiers to ensure that only fully fire-tested dampers are used.

The scope of the guide covers scope, definitions, damper types, main design criteria and responsibilities, system, design, recommendations for installers and comments on the selection of suitable fire-protection materials for making good after installation. It also contains details of test methods for fire-resisting dampers and assessment of test date.

ASFP also publishes guidance on fire-rated and smoke-outlet ductwork. Both guides can be downloaded from the web site.

Air filters by e-commerce
Published:  July 2005

Jasun Filtration has presented its product range on a CD-ROM. It is fully interactive and updatable and, once installed, can be used to obtain quotations, create schedules and order filters.

The guide enables buyers to browse the complete catalogue and download updates and software. It allows e-buyers to buy online, view and calculate pressure-drop information and generate specification sheets for each item.

Account managers can view account activity, settle invoices and track orders.
