Small-scale wind energy
Published: January 2007
The British Wind Energy Association has devised new guidance on the installation of small wind turbines. It contains information on choosing and siting a small wind system, electricity savings, payback times, grant funding and how to contact manufacturers. BWEA stresses that careful siting of small wind systems and knowledge of wind speed to be essential — highlighting the need for detailed research before a small wind system is installed. For example, areas of high turbulence or very low wind speeds will not produce the best returns, while more exposed locations are typically favourable.
Chris Tomlinson, BWEA’s director of operations, explains, ‘While small wind is not a magic solution for the urgent need to secure energy supplies and combat climate change, it can make a small but valuable contribution and can help improve awareness of renewable energy technologies and the need to conserve energy. This guide sets out to realise that potential and promote successful installations.’ www.bwea.com/pdf/briefings/ smallsystems.pdf

Adding guide vanes to axial fans has been found by ebm-papst to be very effective at increasing the throw of air into cold stores. |
Guide vanes increase thrust range of axial fans
Published: January 2007
Trials by ebm-papst with guide vanes fitted to the discharge side of axial fans have doubled or tripled their thrust range — depending on the size of the fan. The company carried out these trials as part of investigations into the efficient cooling of cold storage areas, which require an airflow that permeates to all areas of the room.

Assessing the benefits of power-factor correction
Published: January 2007
Schneider has added a power-factor-correction calculator to its web site. It is easy to use and requires three pieces of information that appear on every electricity bill (maximum demand, power factor and kVA availability charge). Using this information the calculator works out how much money could be saved over a year, how much carbon-dioxide emissions could be reduced and how much power could be made available for other loads.
